Agility is a much-discussed topic right now. But how well are companies doing in their digital transformation efforts? Research firm Luenendonk conducted a study, “Scalable Agility – From agile to digital transformation”, to answer that exact question.
The study shows that the companies surveyed increasingly concern themselves with agile methods. On a positive note, 67 percent of respondents think that change management and behavior transformation are important. This mindset is an important prerequisite for switching to automatic processes and consequently for agile transformation.
The challenge will be that companies can take successful agile methods and apply them to any department or area. For that to happen, user companies as well as SAP customers will have to change drastically.
Agile transformation is not bound to the IT department anymore. More than ever, the value companies see when implementing agile methods is tied to customers, quick reaction to change, and shorter time to market. All of these factors are essential for successful business.
Prerequisites for agile transformation
The study shows that most companies are currently undergoing agile transformation. The majority of respondents (65 percent) said that their company was still at the very beginning of this transformation, though. However, only 23 percent of companies surveyed even had the right prerequisites for agility.
Furthermore, the study shows that the switch to agile models like Scrum, SAFe, or LeSS is a long, complex journey. Just simply implementing agile methods is not enough.
What could become a problem in the recent future is that the majority of respondents wants to tackle the challenge of agile transformation with their current staff. Only 45 percent of companies are recruiting new talent and filling new roles; 58 percent are investing in new learning and training possibilities to support their employees in their new agile roles.
These figures will have to increase, however. Otherwise companies will fail to implement the necessary change processes.
Companies have to undergo fundamental changes in organization, processes, corporate culture, and management tools. Here, HR departments play a vital role, as they have to recruit new talents with the necessary skills to tackle agile transformation.
