Emitwise’s mission is to empower businesses to respond to the climate emergency, future-proofing them for a zero-carbon world. The unique technology enables companies to automatically measure, report, and reduce their carbon footprint across their operations and supply chain. E-3 Magazine spoke with the founders Ben Peddie, Mauro Cozzi, and Eduardo Gómez to learn more about the solution.
E-3 Magazine: What does Emitwise offer?
We are the only solution enabling companies to fully automate their carbon accounting across all business units and suppliers, utilizing artificial intelligence to precisely measure emissions in real time. With Emitwise, businesses can swiftly identify and tackle carbon hotspots, devising a trackable roadmap to net-zero carbon. We are trusted worldwide and across various sectors because our platform scales to the company’s climate ambitions – all the while keeping them aligned to global climate targets and reporting standards, helping them mitigate risks and accelerate their transition to net zero.
How does your solution work?
Our platform combines carbon accounting expertise and clever machine learning technology to create a trusted hybrid system capable of helping customers embed carbon into their decision-making and propel them through their journey to net-zero carbon. We break this down into three steps: Measure, report and reduce.
- Measure. We work with the company to map out their emissions across scopes 1, 2, and 3, which means we look at their operations as well as their entire value chain. We work with data in nearly all formats, from PDFs to full SAP integrations, automating the data flow in whatever format is available, meaning that customers are freed from the drudgery and time constraints of data collection. The carbon footprint is calculated through a proprietary emission factor database with the most accurate and up-to-date EFs, increasing the granularity of the result in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and ISO 14064. What’s more, our AI-powered platform constantly optimizes itself to become more accurate and efficient with every emission it ingests. But this is more than a static yearly footprint. The automation enables continuous carbon data, ongoing climate action, and target tracking.
- Report. Our platform takes care of all your scope 1, 2 and 3 reporting needs, generating reports for key frameworks, for example CDP. Plus, ready-to-share custom reports can be created at the click of a button to engage internal and external stakeholders.
- Reduce. The platform is designed to help companies manage their carbon emissions and ambitiously reduce them as part of a roadmap to net zero carbon. That’s why Emitwise automates dataflows for ongoing actionable insights that empower emission reduction targets and strategies, enabling companies to pivot and stay on track throughout the year. Specifically, the Emitwise platform is science based and aligned with auditable data trails to evidence the target setting and ongoing reporting.
What are the customer-side requirements? Do they need special technology to use your solution?
Customers don’t need to have any specific technology or devices to benefit from Emitwise.
Why did you found Emitwise?
Mauro Cozzi and Eduardo Gómez have been friends since they were 15, where they spent lunchtimes brainstorming business ideas to fight climate change. But it wasn’t until Mauro’s first entrepreneurial venture (that landed him a place on the coveted Berkeley Skydeck) finished that their paths crossed again. Needing a room to rent on returning to London, Mauro moved in with Eduardo and his flatmate, Ben Peddie, who was to become the third co-founder of Emitwise. Post-work brainstorms in the garden turned into thorough research on how to help companies best fight climate change. Working through a network of over 100 of the world’s largest enterprises, they knocked on the doors of CEOs, CFOs, and sustainability managers asking that very question. The big obstacle to lasting climate action was – and mostly still is – the lack of timely and accurate emissions data to enable strategic decisions. Companies often relied on annual audits of their carbon footprint for carbon accounting purposes. However, static yearly results are outdated upon publishing. From here, Emitwise introduced Carbon Accounting 2.0.
How are you connected to SAP?
We have been awarded a place in SAP’s 2021 Sustainable Future Accelerator Program. Which makes us one of just 13 companies selected by SAP.io and Accenture to address the sustainability challenges companies face when fighting climate change.
How has SAP.io’s involvement impacted your journey?
Being part of this program provides a fantastic and unique opportunity to access sandbox systems to test integrations and product functionality within SAP’s systems. Combine this testbed with the support of SAP mentors, who have set up integrations or built solutions with SAP, who can inform our thinking around commercial and technical strategy, and we are aware of how fortunate we are for this opportunity.
What’s next for Emitwise?
In a word, growth! Across every element of the company, our team is growing rapidly, as is customer demand. We are working hard to continually develop our product and processes to ensure we scale to meet the demand. We have an insane amount of customer demand. We’re growing our team, product, and processes to ensure we can meet this growing demand. But for team Emitwise, it all comes back to impact. We want to reduce the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere by working with customers that can cut hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 every year.
