IT infrastructures in general and operating systems in particular have always played a special role in the implementation and operation of SAP solutions, and they are still a central element. As is well known, SAP has consolidated the number of operating systems on Hana. Linux emerged as the winner for all Hana-based solutions – regardless of whether they are operated in the cloud, on premises, or through as-a-service cloud solutions.
As a long-standing SAP partner, Suse has been sitting in the front row, so to speak, for a long time. An estimated 85 percent of all customers using Hana or Hana-based SAP applications also use Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for SAP Applications. SLES for SAP and the native Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) differ in that SLES for SAP has important and valuable functions especially for SAP use, which were developed in cooperation with SAP. Since 1999 – when the SAP Linux Lab was founded – there has been a close partnership between SAP and Suse. On the basis of this partnership, numerous joint developments (such as deployment automation) emerged in order to establish open source solutions for mission-critical SAP use. Other examples would be a cluster solution for Hana called Suse High Availability Extension (HAE) or the system management software Suse Manager.
Tests and benchmarking
Suse recently announced another important milestone in the cooperation: SLES for SAP received the premium certificate SAP Endorsed App. The solution is now available via the SAP Store. Endorsed apps are premium certified by SAP and provide additional security through in-depth tests and benchmark comparisons with other solutions.
At the same time, this certificate represents a recommendation with added value for SAP customers. This includes, among other things, that SLES for SAP and SAP solutions are ideally suited for one another, that they can be used securely, quickly, and efficiently, and that companies can use business models and optimize business processes advantageously – regardless of the industry and of whether it is a medium-sized or large company.
Comprehensive and in-depth tests as well as comparisons with other solutions characterize the certification level Endorsed App. What is also special about this is that you cannot apply for this certification yourself, but rather SAP invites you to do so. This premium certificate was introduced and announced by SAP last year as part of the SAP Global Partner Summit Online.
Of course, the journey together continues. One example is the close cooperation on the topic of Kubernetes containers, namely with the project Gardener, which is an open source project promoted by SAP. The focus is the administration and control of Kubernetes services in a hyperscale environment. For example, specialists from Suse and SAP work closely together to support the development of deployment tools and backend integration for on-premises customers.
